Serena Williams has been ousted from the 2013 Australian Open by 19-year-old Sloane Stephens. Stephens outplayed the tennis great, whose movement and serves had been slowed by a back injury, and beat the 15-time Grand Slam champion 3-6, 7-5, 6-4. It was Williams’ first loss since Aug. 17, and her first defeat at a Grand Slam tournament since last year’s French Open.
After beating Serena, congratulated the 31-year-old Williams and then did what anyone her age would do. She pulled out her phone to check her texts, but the screen was exploding with new ones so quickly that she gave up.
She told ESPN‘s Pam Shriver she already had 145 messages waiting for her.
“I hope to have a lot more Twitter followers,” she said after the match.
Her @sloanetweets account was at 17,000 followers when the match ended at 11:45 p.m. ET. The total stands at 30,000 just after midnight.
