Men in industrial tailored suits weren’t the only people breaking racial barriers. These beautiful women fought with their talents and charm rather than protests and sit-ins (not that there’s anything wrong with the latter) to condemn racial injustice.
These audacious women made history, here’s there contributions to Black history. We bet this wasn’t in your history books.
Blaxploitation’s catapulted Black Hollywood in a new direction. These films not only used a Black cast, but directors and producers were Black. Pam Grier happen to be the leading lady in this genre starring in some of the more notable films.
Dorothy Dandridge (Introducing Dorothy Dandridge) FRIDAY 8pm ET
This Black beauty was the first African-American actress to be nominated for an Academy Award for best actress. Ironically Halle Berry, who played Dorothy in a 1999 film, would end up being the first Black woman to win the Academy Award for best actress.
Josephine Baker (The Josephine Baker Story) FRIDAY 11pm ET
Civil rights activist in a banana skirt, Josephine Baker refused to perform for segregated crowds. She also introduced Europe to America’s Jazz Age.
Billie Holiday (Lady Sings the Blues) SUNDAY 3pm ET
Often regarded as jazz’s best female vocalist, Billie Holiday, helped pioneer America’s jazz sound. Her 1939 song “Strange Fruit” was a recording about racists lynchings in the South.
Juanita Moore (Imitation of Life)
She was the fifth African-American to receive an Academy Award nomination, even though it was for her work as the stereotypical maid on Imitation of Life.

30. If there’s ever been a standout creative and executive that I’ve patterned my trajectory after, it’s @iamdiddy. There’s absolutely nothing about the maestro, mogul and, sometimes, magician that’s not inspiring. Watching him lead his label through the soundtrack of my life last night was a moment one several levels. I experienced it at the right time in the right place. It fully birthed the new beast I’ve been incubating. It was a hell of a show. Thanks @iamdiddy. 🙌🏾
